The PHOENIX project is pleased to highlight it sister project ADOPTION — an EU-funded initiative under the Horizon Europe programme that is closely aligned with our mission to advance photonics and next-generation optical technologies.
ADOPTION (Advanced Co-Packaged Optics Enabling High Efficiency Artificial Intelligence Workload and Cloud Computing) is working toward a low-power, low-cost solution for intra–data centre networks, employing co-packaging of optical (CPO) transceivers with the packet switch chip.
Hyperscale data centres are the backbone of our digital society but account for nearly 1% of global electricity consumption. Scaling their capacity efficiently is becoming increasingly challenging. ADOPTION aims to overcome this by:
- Achieving switch capacities beyond 204.8 Tb/s with port speeds up to 6.4 Tb/s
 - Developing silicon photonics CPO transceiver engines with power efficiency around 3 pJ/bit
 - Introducing innovative two-part packaging to simplify processes and boost yield
 - Demonstrating new optical network architectures for hyperscale data centres and AI clusters.

With these innovations, ADOPTION is targeting a reduction in optical interface costs to below 50 cents per Gb/s while advancing the EU’s sustainability and digital transformation goals.
The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 101070178.
